“Magnificent Mentors”
I’ve recently started working with two new mentors, both women, both very strong and very saavy business owners and both very inspiring!
Mentors have been such an important part of my journey. So, I thought I would share with you how I have found and worked with the mentors in my life.
I believe it boils down to these factors:
- Targeting and attracting the right mentors.
- Being respectful of their time and resources.
- Having extreme follow up skills.
- And finally asking yourself how you can support your own mentors in creating their vision.
Why do you need a mentor? Mentors can help you see a vision for your own life. Ask a mentor what one or two things they wished they knew when they were starting out. This gives them an opportunity to review their own path and share some words of wisdom. Many times just knowing someone else has accomplished certain things and seeing clearly the steps they took can put you on your way to accomplishing your goals.
My Mentors
I have had many mentors in my own life for different reasons and in different areas of my life. My first mentor was my psychologist, Rick Wright http://www.wrightconsultancy.com/. He was a very special psychologist and instead of having a regular Thursday afternoon appointment, he told me to ‘call him when I needed him’. This set up my way of working with mentors. When he left his practice to pursue healing and study different energy modalities, I kept in touch with him. When I felt challenged in my life, he was the person I would call and ask for input and advice. He knew my history and could help me make sense of it all. I always joke that I’m still doing homework that Rick gave me 15 years ago. Rick is now an extremely in-demand, high-level executive business coach and I feel so lucky to have the opportunity to work with him. He taught me to look deeper and find my own answers. Rick’s true gift is his incredible clarity around any situation. Removing everything that isn’t representative of who I want to be and creating a simple next step.
Another mentor, Heide Banks http://www.HeideBanks.com helped me develop my unique voice in the world. My “Sandy-liciousness” :D What sets me apart from everyone else? What does my life experience qualify me to share with others that no one else has experienced exactly the way I have? Heide's gift is helping people discover their authentic voice and living their life from that place of authenticity.
One of my newest mentors came to me in a very magical way, I was playing with my Vision Board and she appeared in my life to grant my wishes. In our first meeting, although I had to step out of my “authorly-comfort zone”, I felt moved to ask her to share with me how she created her successful business and fabulous life. She was thrilled to support me in jumping up my business plan to the next level, and we are already working on a very exciting project together! (I’ll be revealing more about this special project in the next few months, stay tuned...)
All along my path, there have been many people whom I admire and respect and who were willing to share their opinions and their precious time with me. There were several things I did that allowed these relationships to develop. Here is my summary of how you can work with your mentors. I hope it helps you in your work and in your life.
-
Aim High – find someone who you know can give you great advice and perspective on where you are right now in your life and your business.
-
Ask – offer to take them to lunch or buy them a cup of coffee. Most successful people are flattered to share their wisdom and experience with others.
- Be Willing to Pay for Their Time – many of my mentors started out as professional coaches or paid consultants and then our relationship developed from there.
-
Be Relentless in Your Follow Up – don’t be a pest, but make sure you are sending thank you notes each time you speak or email or meet in person and tell them how much you appreciate their time. Send a note or email and give updates on your progress or send clips from newspapers/magazine articles about you or about something that might interest them in their work/life. Stay connected and give them a ‘stake’ in your success.
-
Ask How You Can Support Them – don’t assume that because they are successful and may be further along their path than you are that you don’t have a great deal to offer them as well. Sending a note out to your friends and colleagues about your mentors work is always greatly appreciated, and there may be even more ways you can support their success. Always ask and keep on asking!

Is it time to get your online business rockin’ & rollin’? One of my business mentors is the fabulous Alexandria Brown “The Ezine Queen”.
|
I’ve known Ali since before my first book was published. We met at a book marketing event in Los Angeles many years ago and I’ve watched her build a 6 figure business online while maintaining a fabulous lifestyle that includes lots of fun vacations. (Who wants to build a business only to be a slave to it and never have any fun???)
|
Ali is having her famous “Online Marketing Blueprint Workshop” where she takes you by the hand and gives you her blueprint for online business success. It’s the exact recipe that she has used to build her own business and one that I’m using too! (with great success, I might add.)
Ali always hosts great events that include lots of fun along with lots of learning. I hope you’ll join me in LA this November for a really great event.
