We took the girls to see “Wicked” this weekend. It was *SOOOOOO* great! My fabulous assistant hadn’t heard of it, so I made her go download my favorite song from the show “Defying Gravity”… then I went and listened to the song again and again and I got inspired, today’s article is all about how you can defy gravity in your life.

And speaking of someone who is definitely defying gravity lately, my friend Alexandria Brown is blowing the roof off of what some people think is ‘possible’. Defying Gravity

“Something has changed within me. Something is not the same. I'm through with playing by the rules of someone else’s game. Too late for second-guessing. Too late to go back to sleep. It's time to trust my instincts. Close my eyes, and leap! It's time to try defying gravity.” (photo by Joan Marcus, 2003)

What is that feeling that rises up within me? Where does it come from? I call it The Glimpse. You get a glimpse out of the corner of your eye of what is possible. Sometimes it’s a little blurry, but it’s definitely you, operating at your greatest.

And then what happens? The Inner Critic pops up and says things like; “you can’t do that.” “Who do you think you are?” “You don’t have enough _______”.

What? What does your inner critic say?

The Inner Wisdom whispers and the Inner Critic yells. It’s time to quiet the inner critic and allow your Inner Wisdom to drive the bus. Perhaps your Inner Wisdom is whispering that it’s time to upgrade to a jet? Or even a rocket ship? Can you hear what your inner wisdom is whispering today?

Here are a few tips to guide you in honoring your inner wisdom and defying gravity:

1. Breathe – close your eyes right now and take a deep breath, in through your nose, hold it for a few seconds and then slowly release the breath out through your mouth. Go. Now go do it 2 more times, but this time, notice the breath going in and out. Feel the coolness of the air, fill your lungs completely, and let the new energy of this fresh air fill your body.


2. Connect to Your Greatest Vision – here’s where that Glimpse comes in. Can you see it? Does it scare you? Do you have little butterflies in your belly? Good. That means you’re on the right track. Keep breathing as you close your eyes again and allow yourself to fully go into this vision. The YOU that wants to come through. The YOU that sees everything and knows exactly what is right for you. Can you see her (or him)? If you have trouble connecting to your ‘glimpse of greatness’, try journaling about a time when you felt completely on purpose in your life, let yourself dream big.


3. Take Action – here’s the tricky one, now what? You’ve got this vision and it’s nowhere near the life you are actually living today. Now what do you do? The answer is: Just One Thing. Close your eyes again and ask that wise, powerful energy that is living inside of you; “What one action can I take today that will have the greatest impact on my life?” Write down the first thing that pops into your head. If you do nothing else, take that one action toward stepping into your greatest glimpse. Send an email, make a phone call, write a letter, read an article. There is a place inside of you that knows exactly what you need to do.

I understand, defying gravity can be challenging. I feel it too, in my own life, every single day. Sometimes it feels like we are so small and our inner critic is screaming “who are you to have that dream?”

Just one thing. That’s all it takes. One small action today, tells the universe that you are serious. You are declaring; “I am ready! Bring it on!”

Here are the other 2 verses of Defying Gravity from the play Wicked. Go sing them as loud as you can! You deserve to fly.

I'm through accepting limits,’ cause someone says they're so. Some things I cannot change, but 'till I try, I'll never know. Too long I've been afraid of losing love, I guess I've lost. Well, if that’s love, it comes at much too high a cost. I'd sooner buy defying gravity- Kiss me goodbye. I'm defying gravity, and you can't pull me down.

So if you care to find me- Look to the western sky. As someone told me lately: "Everyone deserves the chance to fly!" And if I'm flying solo, At least I'm flying free. To those who'd ground me, Take a message back from me: Tell them how I am Defying gravity. I'm flying high, Defying gravity. And soon I'll match them in renown. And nobody in, all of Oz. No Wizard that there is or was. Is ever gonna bring me down!
