I’ve just returned from a much needed break with my family. Well, it was a break for me, my husband actually had to work at a trade show in Orlando, so I took the opportunity to get away with my girls and stay at a nice hotel, play by the pool and order room service. It was lovely. We stayed at the JW Marriot Grande Lakes, here’s a picture of me with my scrumptious niece by the pool.

Check out the photo tour of the lazy river that goes all around the hotel. It was soooo relaxing ==> Photos of the Grande Lakes Resort
Today’s article is about the value of giving yourself a break in the middle of your hectic schedule. A little mini-vacation will do wonders for your state of mind and will make you that much more creative and productive when you do get back to work.

“You’re Being Too Hard on Yourself”
One of my fabulous coaching clients is finishing up a draft of her first book proposal and sample chapters and getting ready to send it off to her editor. We worked together to plan her schedule. She needed to complete the edits on her chapters and the introduction before her family arrived for a 1 week stay. We discussed how wonderful she would feel once everything was sent off to the editor and she could relax and be with her family, taking a much deserved break.
When she sent me her coaching form the night before our call, she wrote that she was on task. Yet the day of her call, I could hear the stress in her voice as she talked about how her family would be arriving later that day and she still needed to work on the introduction a little more. She told me she had run into some ‘blocks’ with a sleepless night and feeling exhausted the next day.
I reviewed her objectives contained in the original paperwork she provided when we began coaching together, I pointed out how far she has come in making progress toward her goal of finishing her book project. She initially wrote to me that the process of getting published feels ‘so big and overwhelming that I spend a lot of time running around in circles and not doing what I need to do.” Now, just a few short months later, she has established a writing rhythm that works for her life, allowing her to teach workshops and develop the content for her book and still maintain balance in her life. She is stretching her comfort zone while staying connected to her own inner wisdom and keeping a good balance of working and self-nurturing.
I find that most of the clients I work with are very driven in their creative & professional pursuits and rarely take the time to celebrate how far they’ve come on their journey. (it takes one to know one, I guess). So I’ve put together a few tips for you today to help you celebrate your journey and restore balance in your creative, personal and professional life. I hope you like it.
- Look at the current task or to-do list you are using, or better yet, look at the one from yesterday or last week.
- Review all of the work and congratulate yourself for being a responsible, upstanding, motivated human being with goals, dreams and bigger things that you are working toward. (you can celebrate EVERYTHING: errands, personal tasks, laundry, clean house, etc.. congratulate yourself for caring enough to do these things! Did you see that Oprah about the lady that never did the dishes or picked up dog poop?)
- Plan at least 2 celebratory moments, one to be completed this week and one to be completed no later than next Friday, July 27th. Put these on your calendar right now!
- Here are a few ideas: manicure/pedicure, something chocolate, your favorite bottle of wine or cup of coffee/tea (and plans to enjoy it alone or with a friend), massage, bubble bath, tickets to a concert or sporting event, night out with your partner or friends, something chocolate, rent or go see a movie, take a walk in nature, buy a new cd (or download 5 new-favorite songs from iTunes), did I say something chocolate? :D yummmmm
- I suggest you pick one ‘little’ thing that’s easy to do right now, and one thing that you have to plan. Keep this date with yourself- no matter what!!!! This is my homework assignment to you.
When you take the time to fill yourself up with good energy in between the to-do’s you bring more light and creativity to the next task at hand. You are now able to zip through those next items with a renewed focus and clarity, because you took the time to refresh and rejuvenate yourself.
Good job on being a “Do It Now” kind of person and good job on celebrating all of the things you’ve accomplished in the last few weeks. Your to-do list will probably never get completely DONE, so just enjoy that feeling today of looking at all you have already done and give yourself a much-needed (and much deserved) pat on the back. To YOU from ME, Good Job!
YOU ROCK. :D!
